Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier.

Feeding and digestion with bivalves ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc.
On the contrary to the U. S. where they represent but 4.6% of the total marine production , mollusc, principally bivalves, can no longer be considered as a marginal production. In France, 100 000 ton of oysters, 98% of which is represented by Crassostrea gigas (Héral & al., 1985) and 85 000 ton of mussels (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus edulis galloprovincialis) (Dardignac, 1985) are produced yeraly. Elsewhere, new rearings are being developed, such as pectinidae and Ruditapes philippinarum, on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. The species presently cultured, some of which dependiing only on natural collections (Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis while others depend on hatchery production, either partially Crasssotrea gigas in...

First record of the microsporidian parasite Steinhausia mytilovum in Mytilus sp (Bivalvia : Mytilidae) from France ArchiMer
Comtet, Thierry; Garcia, Celine; Le Coguic, Yvette; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Steinhausia mytilovuln is a globally distributed microsporidian parasite which infects the oocytes of the blue mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Despite the intensive monitoring effort made on mussel populations, the parasite has not previously been reported in France. We report herein on the occurrence of S. mytilovum in Mytilus sp. from 1 cultured and 2 natural populations on the northern coast of France, thus extending the parasite's known distribution northwards. We also report on the observation in 1989 of S. mytilovum in M, galloprovincialis from the Golfe de Fos area in the Mediterranean Sea (South of France), S. mytilovum was observed in the European hybrid zone between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, which therefore renders the...

Gut passage times in two bivalve molluscs fed toxic microalgae: Alexandrium minutum, A-catenella and Pseudo-nitzschia calliantha ArchiMer
Gueguen, Marielle; Lassus, Patrick; Laabir, Mohamed; Bardouil, Michele; Baron, Regis; Sechet, Veronique; Truquet, Philippe; Amzil, Zouher; Barille, Laurent.
The occurrence of new phytoplankton species in a coastal area may be explained by the import of shellfish containing whole live algal cells in their digestive tracts. Indeed, shellfish containing toxic algal cells can induce both primary contaminations in safe areas ( initially free from toxic microalgae), and secondary contaminations of other shellfish growing in the same area via the faeces of the imported animals. To mitigate this problem, shellfish need to be placed in a separate holding tank and their intestinal content purged. For a deeper understanding of the risks associated with transferring contaminated shellfish, oysters ( Crassostrea gigas) and mussels ( Mytilus edulis) were purposely fed either Alexandrium minutum or A. catenella (...

Sam Lone, Anais.
Among the applications that facilitate the study of functional processes in living systems, measurement of the spatial distribution of molecules in biological tissues is currently available. Thus, in the field of human health, this application which targets the molecular distributions of altered tissues can be used, for example, in the diagnosis of diseases such as cancers, Alzheimer's disease, muscular myopathy, but also to recognize the distribution of drugs in animal tissues. The principle of imaging by mass spectrometry is to produce a mapping of the surface of a section of tissue, recording at each point a mass spectrum. All these spectra reconstitute so many "ion density maps", called images, that there are peaks of biological interest in the...

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms form test sites - Final Report ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Adessi, L.; Gras, Paul.
Experiments were canied out to assess the copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) trealment effeets on the Blue mussel Mytilus edulis physiology. Experimental design included two complementary approaches: 1) scope for growth esrimates based upon the energy balance between respiration energy loss and energy gained from feeding processes. 2) a biological early waming system for valve behavior monitoring under CCA exposures. Various temperature range (seasonal effeet). physiological status (mature & immature mussels) as weil as CCA concentrations (from 0 to 48kg/m3) and rime exposure were tested. Significant monality rates for the experimental mussel populations were recorded in alI experimental modalities but the 2kg/m3 CCA treatment concentration. Overall results...

Impact on non target organisms of anti-marine wood-borer treatments. Evaluation of stress imposed by treatments on organisms from test sites ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Gras, Paul; Adessi, L..
In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two...

Minet, Jacques; Sauvager, F; Cormier, M.
Illnesses due to marine bivalvia consumption are mostly associated with viruses as causative agents. In more than the half of cases, this agent remains unidentifies, nevertheless. So far as bacteria are concerned, Salmonella are found firstly. Campylobacters represent a major cause of gastrointestinal disease, with Salmonella, among humans. Whether campylobacteriosis may be acquired from shellfishes remains unclear. We undertook to comparatively appreciate the survival of Campylobacter jejuni/coli and Salmonella typhimurium in seawater and contaminated mussels. Bacterial enumerations where performes using microbial cultures and specific (with immunofluorescence) direct viable counts (of substrate responsive bacteria). During laboratory contamination...

Prou, Jean; Barille, Laurent; Heral, Maurice; Ratiskol, Gilles; Soletchnik, Patrick; Bougrier, Serge; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe.
During a fortnightly tidal cycle, a Mytilus edulis population was submitted to natural food conditions in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. During 4 tidal cycles, in vivo continuous measurements of turbidity and fluorescence were recorded to study the evolution of Total Particulate Matter (TPM), phaeopigments and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Turbidity in the water column is clearly influenced by resuspension of sediment. Degradated cells of phytoplankton were associated with sediments, involving strong correlation between phaeopigments and turbidity. High values of chlorophyll-a were encountered during neap tides when turbidity was low. No relation with resuspension processes were observed. No effect of fortnightly variability on retention was observed by...

Influence of suspended mussel lines on sediment erosion and resuspension in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec, Canada ArchiMer
Walker, Tony R.; Grant, Jon; Weise, Andrea M.; Mckindsey, Christopher W.; Callier, Myriam D.; Richard, Marion.
Downward fluxes of organically rich biodeposits under suspended mussel lines can cause benthic impacts such as changes in benthic community structure or microbial mat production. Quantifying sediment erosion in these coastal ecosystems is important for understanding how fluxes of organic matter and mussel biodeposits contribute to benthic–pelagic coupling. Critical shear velocity (u*crit), erosion rates and particle size distributions of resuspended sediment were measured at four stations distributed along a transect perpendicular to a mussel farm in Lagune de la Grande Entrée, Îles-de-la-Madeleine (Quebec, Canada). Stations were selected underneath the outer-most mussel line (0 m) and at distances of 15, 30 m and at a reference station (500 m) further...

Integration of shellfish farming activies in three French coastal environments : Mont Saint-Michel Bay, Gulf of Morbihan, and Marennes-Oleron Bay ArchiMer
Mazurie, Joseph; Le Mao, Patrick; Camus, Patrick; Bacher, Cedric; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Integration of shellfish farming along the French shoreline (around 5500 km) has been progressive, as marine bivalve culture is a traditional activity in our country. The history of mussel culture relates that the "bouchot" technique (intertidal culture on wooden poles, producing annually around 60,000 tons) was developed as early as the XIIIth century, by a refugee attempting to capture birds by sticking branches of brushwood along the shore. The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, already appreciated at the Roman period, was first cultivated in France after Victor Coste introduced the technique of spat collection at the end of the XIXth century. The Pacific cupped oyster, genus Crassostrea, now the most-cultivated in France (around 120,000 tons marketed...

Isolation and primary culture of gill and digestive gland cells from the common mussel Mytilus edulis ArchiMer
Faucet, Jerome; Maurice, Manuelle; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Burgeot, Thierry.
As the marine mussel Mytilus edulis is commonly used as a sentinel species, it would be useful to develop a primary culture of the target organs most often in contact with the marine environment. This study reports an improved method for dissociating the digestive gland and gills of M. edulis and considers the effect of mussel storage on cell viability and functionality before culture initiation. Viability and enzymatic activities such as those of esterase and peroxidase were monitored by flow cytometry, a sensitive, objective technique allowing large volumes of cells to be counted within a short time. A primary culture of digestive gland showed more than 75% viability after 72 h. Mussels were maintained in an aquarium containing clean, oxygenated seawater...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Joly, Jean-pierre; Le Gagneur, Eric; Ruelle, Francois.
This report describes the mussel Mytilus edulis sampling stock strategy developed to carry out stock assesments along the French Normandy coastline between 1989 and 1993. The overall totalnetweight reached 13,992 metric tons in 1993 with 27% precision level. Simultaneously, a growth study was carried out on 36 experimental sites to estimate overall variability. Individual total weight varied from 6.6 to 12 g at rearing cycle completion. An empirical management model conceming the Western Cotentin rearing areas was proposed and explained 68% of total weight variance. Based on a stepwise multilinear relationship, the model linked overall growth performance to local stocking density, tidal distribution, and distance from the main runoffs inputs. It aims to...

Dardignac, Marie-jose.
The studies carried out between 1980 and 1992 in the "Pertuis Breton" showed that mussels growth was systematically reduced near the coastline for an identical immersion time. No relationship was established between current pattern, stocking biomass and growth results. In contrast, poor growth was strongly correlated to seawater quality and especially to high seston load. The author suggests further studies which could confirm and complement these results: a better environment understanding through data acquisition, inclusion of additional parameters, studies on factors affecting shellfish quality. Furthermore, specific studies are proposed which are aimed at optimising mussel production in the Pertuis Breton. This includes a constant spat recruitment...
